A QUICK CLARIFICATION

"What's the difference between an ns10 & an ns10m studio?"

There are SIX models of this famous Yamaha near-field monitor. These six speakers came out in three stages over about twenty years, each new model building on the improvements of the last:

  • 1 model in 1978: i) NS-10M [original, vertical, clear mids/ harsh highs, 50W max, limted bass (85Hz), most common today]
  • 3 models in 1987: ii) NS-10M PRO iii) NS-10M STUDIO iv) NS-10MC [improved tweeter, 120W max, latter two horizontal, new terminals/crossover, bass to 60Hz, less common, more expensive]
  • 2 models in the Mid-Nineties: v) NS-10MX vi) NS-10MT [magnetically shielded, verticle, rare, MT bass to 45Hz]

Note that there is actually no model spelled "NS10", per se. "NS10" ("NS-10", "ns10's", etc.) are abbreviations or nicknames that became standard over the years. This has also been the cause of some confusion between models.

Click on a model name for more details and distinguishing features. Check out the NS10 Specifications Chart to quickly compare the specs and list prices of all models side by side, or the gallery to compare visual differences. The buying guide will help you decide if shopping for ns10's, and see the naming conventions page to clarify how the various models are labelled. Also find other information about related models, suitable amplifiers, parts, trivia, history, etc.

This website is dedicated to solving, resolving, unravelling & untangling the unnecessary & confusing mystery surrounding the ubiquitous NS10 monitor family.
